One of Marlo's favourite projects - unrelated to a film or theatre production - is the Queen of Hearts costume. This costume was created in collaboration with two of her classmates, Bobby Cook, and Mieko Graham, in 2020 for a light-up costume intensive through their education at Capilano University.
The Queen of Hearts has taken a dark turn from Lewis Carroll's Wonderland character with a more anatomical design and colour palette. While discussing the direction we wanted to take the character in, the names Amelia Dyer and Elizabeth Báthory were brought up - infamous serial killers known for the murder of hundreds (Dyer), and bathing in the blood of their victims (Báthory). The costume reflects more of the character's evil tendencies in her scythe as well as reflecting a darker, and more anatomical colour palette. At the same time, the silhouette, rose, and lights harken back to a lighter fairytale character as depicted by the well-known Disney interpretation of Carroll's character.
